In a career full of highlights, one of Andrew’s greatest achievements was leading England to victory in a Test series in Australia, a feat rarely achieved by touring sides.
The win gained England the position as the number one team in the world, but the wheels soon came off when Andrew and star England player Kevin Pietersen publicly fell out as the team slipped back down the world rankings.
After a brilliant playing career, Andrew became the Director of Cricket for the ECB, a role that he resigned from to spend time with his wife, Ruth, who had been diagnosed with a rare incurable lung cancer that affects non-smokers.
Ruth died aged 46 and Andrew set up the Ruth Strauss Foundation, a charity that provides emotional support for families to prepare for the death of a parent and raise awareness of the need for more research & collaboration in the fight against non-smoking lung cancers.
