BetMGM Eyes Alberta Market Launch

BetMGM Eyes Alberta Market Launch

Alberta Regulation

The regulation of legal gambling in Alberta looks set to be one of the biggest industry stories of 2025.

The province has confirmed it will be closely following the road map laid out by Ontario since its launch in 2022.

Unsurprisingly, a queue of operators are likely to want a share of the market, with BetMGM confirming their interest in a recent interview.

Very Interested

While there is no official time-frame for the launch of the Alberta gaming market, there are plenty of moving parts taking place right now that ensure it will be a major player in North America when it does.

In an interview with Canadian Gaming Business, BetMGM’s VP of Canada, Scott Woodgate, confirmed that the brand would be interested in entering the province. Woodgate said that the company would be eager to take everything it has learned through its operations in Ontario and apply those lessons to Alberta.

Woodgate did note that, of course, Alberta is going to be a different beast to Ontario, with the province having its own culture and sporting demands. However, he stated that he believes it has the potential to be a major player for BetMGM.

A Strong Position

When the Alberta market does launch, BetGM will find itself in a strong positon compared to other operators looking to enter the market. The brand is globally recognised and has an incredibly strong presence in North America.

While there are no exact figures available, it is believed that BetMGM owns a 22% market share in Ontario, highlighting the strength of the brand in Canada. With all of this on the company’s side, it is clear it has the potential to be a significant player in Alberta when the market finally opens.
