The Super Bowl is always one of the hottest sports betting events of the year, and last weekend’s clash between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs produced record-breaking numbers across North America.
Several major operators reported big taking in Canada, with PointsBet, BetMGM, and Play Alberta all reporting successful betting weekends.
PointsBet reported that the bulk of money wagered over the weekend was on the Kansas City Chiefs winning the event, with ‘Saquon Barkley to score a touchdown anytime’ also receiving a lot of attention.
Ultimately, these bets would not have paid off with the Philadelphia Eagles winning the Lombardi Trophy and Barkley failing to score a touchdown. There was also a lot of bets placed on Patrick Mahomes winning the MVP award, which the Eagles’ Jalen Hurts ultimately won.
Ontario Lottery and Gaming also reported that novelty betting was popular with bettors, with bets on the coin flip and the colour of the Gatorade thrown on the winning coach being popular markets. Novelty betting always proved successful during the Super Bowl, and this year saw even more markets than usual opened up.
Big Numbers
PointBet Ontario reported that its sportsbook turnover and the number of unique users were around eight to ten times the size they would receive for a standard NFL match. Elsewhere, BetMGM noted Ontario as its eighth-biggest market over the weekend.
Alberta’s Play Alberta, the only regulated sports betting provider in the region, also reported to Canadian Gaming Business that it had seen a higher number of voters for this year’s Super Bowl compared to last year’s.
There were also some big winners over the weekend. In Ontario, the Ontario Lottery and Gaming’s PROLINE reported a winner bagging over $38,000 for getting 14 selections correct on a PROLINE Super Bowl pool.
