Poker Rules

Poker is one of the most popular card games in the world, played at online casinos and land-based venues across the globe. But with many variations and complex rules, poker can be intimidating for beginners.

To help you learn how it works and start playing, we’ve created this handy guide to basic poker rules. Read on to discover what a ‘flop’ is, why ‘showdowns’ are important, and much more!

The Basic Rules of Poker

When you sit at a poker table for the first time, it’s likely that other players will be more experienced than you. But if you can bring a basic knowledge of the rules of poker to the table with you, you’ll be able to make informed decisions with your cards and chips. Here are the basic poker rules you need to know before you start playing.

Preflop

PRE-FLOP

The preflop is the stage that occurs before the flop (see below). This is the first betting round in some games of poker, though only if three community cards will be dealt on the second round of betting. As there is no flop in stud and draw poker games, they have no preflop stage either.

Flop

THE-FLOP

The first three community cards dealt in a game of poker are known as the ‘flop’. Community cards are crucial for helping players build the best poker hand possible, alongside their hole cards. After the flop, players complete a second betting round (starting with the player to the left of the dealer button).

Turn

THE-TURN

A fourth community card is dealt after the second betting round ends. This is referred to as the ‘turn’ (or ‘fourth street’). Remaining players can pick from six cards (four community cards, two hole cards) to build their best hand of five cards.

River

THE-RIVER

After the turn, a fourth betting round begins. Once this round ends, a fifth and final community card (the ‘river’) is dealt to the middle of the table. This is followed by a last betting round, and the showdown (if possible). Players reveal their cards, and the best five-card hand wins!

General Poker Rules: Buy-Ins, Showdowns, and More

Now that we’ve covered the basic poker game rules, we’ll move on to more general rules you’ll encounter from game to game. These range from simple poker rules to more complicated ones.

Buy-In

Buy-In

You need to make a buy-in when you join a poker game: a payment that allows you to take part. The size of the buy-in varies depending on the game and its stakes. For limit poker games, buy-ins are often a minimum of 10x the maximum bet, though that can differ. For pot-limit or no-limit poker games, the buy-in can be 40x the big blind.

Shuffle and Cut

Shuffle and Cut

The pack of cards used in a player-dealt poker game should be shuffled and cut before any cards are dealt. Two or three people may be involved in the shuffle and cut to ensure fairness.

Generally, at least four cards must be in each portion after the cut, and no players should be able to see the bottom card (a joker is usually the cut-card).

Misdeals

Misdeals

A ‘misdeal’ refers to a mistake in dealing cards. Players may call a misdeal, before two players take action, in a range of situations. For example, the first or second card of a hand may be dealt face-up, or the dealer exposes a card accidentally. A misdeal can also be called if cards are dealt in the wrong sequence or the button is in the wrong position.

Dead Hands

Dead Hands

A player’s hand may be ‘dead’ if they fold, exceed a time limit on raising or betting, or it has too few cards as required for the game. Cards can be declared ‘dead’ when thrown into a different player’s hand, or when face-up cards are mixed with face-down cards (in stud games).

Irregularities

Irregularities

There are many irregularities to consider in the basic rules of poker. For example, players are obligated to inform others and the dealer if they realise a defective deck is being used. If they try to use that to their advantage instead, they may be unable to get a refund.

Another example is discovering a joker card in a deck: these are replaced if found before a player acts, but if a player doesn’t point out to others that they have a joker before they act, their hand is considered dead.

 Betting and Raising

Betting and Raising

The check-raise process is in almost all poker games, with the exception of some lowball games.

Players can raise without limitation in pot-limit and no-limit games. Bets are required to be equal to the size of a previous wager or raise in the current round or higher (though not if players are going all-in).

In limit games, a player moving chips forward into the pot area (even accidentally) may be required to follow through with their action if they prompt another player to take action.

Showdown

Showdown

The showdown comes at the end of a poker game. At this stage, all players still in the hand must reveal their cards by placing them face-up on the table. Dealers can help to announce hands if necessary. If all players check on the last round of betting (or go all-in), the player who made the first action will reveal their hand before everyone else.

Ties

Ties

If two or more players hold matching hands during the showdown of a game, a winner can be decided in various ways. If both players have a straight flush, for instance, the flush containing the highest card is the winner. For a full-house tie, the winning hand has the highest-ranking three of a kind.

Limit vs No Limit

When playing poker, you will see limit and no limit games. What’s the difference?

Limit

Limit betting rules apply to numerous poker games. In limit games, players can only raise or bet in specific increments.

Limit poker games use a small bet and big bet (the big blind typically matches the small bet). Often, the maximum bet corresponds to the small bet in the initial betting rounds, but expands to the big bet later in the game. Betting tends to be capped after three raises in every round. Beyond that point, players may only call instead of raising.

No Limit

In no limit poker games, players have the freedom to wager as many of their chips as they want to at any point. That means they can bet every chip they have, known as going all-in. However, they can only bet the chips in front of them on the table — no more.

Poker Rules Final Thoughts

The UK gambling market is worth more than £15 billion, encompassing many types of games — including poker. As it’s so popular, you’ll find poker at many land-based and online poker sites. While learning even the basic rules of poker can be daunting for newcomers, researching the game is important if you want to make smart choices at poker tables. As a beginner, you might benefit from watching a few games of poker before you take part. That can help you get a feel for the structure, and seeing how the rules are implemented in real-time may make them easier to pick up.

However, remember to play poker responsibly. Set a bankroll limit and stick to it. Only bet what you can afford to lose, and focus on having fun at the poker table.
