Octo Attack Slot Review

The Octo Attack slot has a striking, comic book-style design, although much of the screen is in black and grey. The splashes of colour come from the higher-paying symbols on the grid, and they represent things you might find in a dumpster – fish heads, almost-empty cans of beer, mushrooms and radioactive-looking lollies. 

Otto the Octopus is another colourful addition to the grid, although he looks quite menacing as he floats up and down to the side of the grid. It’s not clear how he has ended up in the dumpster, but hopefully he can help us to land some wins while he’s there. 

Some of the symbols in the game are in monochrome, which I found slightly confusing at first. It turns out that they are simply the lower-paying symbols in the game, while the higher-paying ones are in colour.

There are some Wild symbols in Octo Attack, which can appear in monochrome or with coloured multiplier values overlaid on top. There are also Normal and Epic free spins symbols (Normal are pink and Epic are yellow), which trigger the free spins round when three or more of them appear on the reels.

Ink Stains appear on symbol positions after they have formed part of a win, and the Eye of Otto can randomly appear to transform Ink Stain symbols for a chance to win a prize (more on that later).

But for now, let’s take a look at some of the symbols and payouts. Note that wins are awarded for clusters of five or more symbols, and in this list I have only included payouts for larger clusters:

Orange shark: 15+ = 500x bet / 13 - 25 = 100x bet / 11 -12 = 30x bet

Ice lolly / mushroom (these symbols have the same value): 15+ = 250x bet / 13 - 25 = 50x bet / 11 -12 = 15x bet

Beer can / green fish (these symbols have the same value): 15+ = 150x bet / 13 - 25 = 25x bet / 11 -12 = 7.5x bet

Five grey symbols (all with the same value): 15+ = 100x bet / 13 - 25 = 15x bet / 11 -12 =    5x bet

Octo Attack has a few special features to explore. Let’s have a closer look at the bonus features below:

Eye of Otto and the Tenta-Grab Mechanic

Ink Stains replace winning symbols on the grid after a win, for the next spin only. If the Eye of Otto appears on the grid on the same spin as Ink Stains, a tentacle will lash out and grab one random symbol on the grid (this could include Wilds, Wild Multipliers, Free Spins, high-paying symbols or low-paying symbols). All other Ink Stain positions will be transformed into that symbol.

Eighth Arm Is the Charm Feature

This bonus is triggered by landing at least three Normal Free Spin symbols. The number of symbols that activates the round equates to the number of free spins you will get. During the bonus game, Ink Stains are not removed until they have formed part of the Tenta-Grab feature. Additional free spins can be won during the bonus.

Give Me Eight! Feature

This feature is very similar to the previous one, except it is triggered by Epic Free Spin symbols rather than normal ones. In this bonus, the Tentra-Grab only grabs Wilds or Wild Multipliers, offering the potential for bigger wins.

Octo Attack is a unique slot game that shows imagination and creativity from the developers. Although the black and grey theme is a little dreary, this is clearly the intention, and the pops of colour help to brighten things up. 

The Tenta-Grab mechanic has the potential to lead to some big wins, but if you’re not lucky enough to trigger it you could end up getting a little bored, since there aren’t many other special features except for the free spins.

The game  has an RTP of 96.27% and is medium volatility, which means that wins are likely to occur less often than some other games, but they should be bigger wins when they do happen. The maximum win of 10,000x your bet is certainly appealing, and the design of the game definitely makes it stand out from the crowd.

Although it might have been nice to see an additional bonus feature or two, Octo Attack is a unique slot game that will appeal to those looking for something a little different.
