I have to admit, I am not the biggest fan of Ancient Egyptian-themed slots, I feel it is quite a tired genre that needs a little break (after all there are so many more exciting ancient cultures to explore and celebrate!) However, keeping my objective reviewer head firmly on my shoulders, I can appreciate that the Sphinx Coin Boost slot is a creative and well-designed game with enough unique elements to differentiate it from the rest.
While there are some Sphinx slots out there, in general, this genre of slot focuses on tomb raiding, Pharaohs or Cleopatra, so it does feel just the slightest bit refreshing. I like the symbol design in this game, as while there are some of the age-old icons like scarabs and Ankhs, there are also symbols which capture the Sphinx’s lion-shaped body; taking the form of big cats - even the wild symbol has been cleverly selected to be Bastet, the beloved cat-headed goddess.
The bonus features in this slot are really good. The MultiWays engine shakes up the traditional payline formula, and I can see Megaways slots fans enjoying this element greatly. The three bonuses all work harmoniously with one another, and I love that if you trigger the Jackpot Bonus a prize is guaranteed - or, all of them!
What I do not like about this slot is the vague information regarding the statistics. While the bonus features, paytable, and so on are well explained in the information section, outside the RTP (a respectable 96.2%) there is no information on other usual metrics such as volatility, variance, hit rate, or even the top win not expressed as coins. I prefer my slots to be totally transparent with the data, so this is a mark against IGT. Alongside this the 60p minimum bet is pretty astronomical considering what is usually seen in online slots, while it does not sound like much, a player with a £20 budget could afford 33 spins, as opposed to games with a 10p minimum allowing for 200.
Overall, there is plenty to love about the Sphinx Coin boost, but personally, as the Ancient Egyptian slot market is so packed, the lack of transparency and high minimum wagering requirement would have me looking elsewhere. For these reasons, I give the Sphinx Coin Boost slot a strong (but not necessarily mighty) rating of 7/10.
