Darts fever has swept the UK over the last few weeks, with the performance of 16-year-old Luke Littler in the World Championships grabbing the public’s imagination. The 2024 World Championship has been one of the most popular darts tournaments in recent years, and its increased popularity has helped raise awareness of several important issues.
One such issue is Prostate Cancer awareness, with the leading UK bookmaker using the tournament to promote the topic. The ‘Big 180’ campaign was launched by the operator before the start of the tournament, with the aim of donating £1000 for every 180 that was hit.
Rounding up to a Million
This year’s World Darts Championship was a top-quality tournament, with the final between Luke Humphries and Luke Little seeing the total number of 180s reach 914. This beat the previous year’s total of 901, with Paddy Power donating £901,000 as a result.
Following the media attention of the tournament and the increased popularity of the event, Paddy Power announced that it would be rounding up the £914,000 raised through the 180s up to £1m, with all donations going to Prostate Cancer UK, the UK’s leading charity dedicated to the illness.
Alarming Statistics
The Big 180 campaign was set up by Paddy Power with the intention of highlighting the dangers of prostate cancer and encouraging more men to get checked regularly. The campaign notes that it only takes 30 seconds for men to assess their risk. Statistics show that one in eight men will encounter prostate cancer in their lives.
It is not just Paddy Power that is getting in on the act. Tournament winner Luke Humphries has also pledged to donate some of his £500k tournament winnings to the cause. It has been a fantastic end to the year for Humphries, who also won the 2023 Grand Slam of Darts, the 2023 World Grand Prix, and the 2023 Players Championship Finals.
