The 17th edition of the European Championship is looming large and this summer's tournament looks wide open.

Germany are the hosts, Italy the defending champions and France and England among the hot favourites to be crowned champions of Europe in Berlin on July 14th.

But there are plenty of people out there who are making cases for Spain, Portugal, Belgium and a whole host of other nations eager to prove they can rule the continent.

Ronaldo Can Sign Off In Style

There is no sign of Cristiano Ronaldo hanging up his boots any time soon, but this may well be the 39-year-old's last major international tournament - and back him to bow out with a win.

The man who led Portugal to glory at Euro 2016 is ready to repeat the feat eight years later, though he might not be quite the central figure he was back then.

And the point is, he doesn't need to be.

Take a look through Roberto Martinez's squad and it's packed with quality in every position to the extent that, while Ronaldo is the undisputed skipper and leader, he isn't necessarily a nailed-on starter, certainly not in every game.

Manchester City's Ruben Dias, one of the best central defenders in world football, is flanked by the likes of former Etihad favourite Joao Cancelo and Diogo Dalot, who finished the season in great form for Manchester United.

Dalot's Old Trafford colleague Bruno Fernandes is the string puller in midfield, where the muscle will come from Joao Palhinha. Across the front line Martinez can perm from Bernado Silva, Diogo Jota, Rafael Leao, Goncalo Ramos and, nor forgetting of course, Ronaldo himself.

If they win Group F they should go into a half of the draw minus France, England and Belgium and that makes them a massively attractive each-way proposition for outright glory.

Southgate's Last Chance Is Best Yet

It's hard to imagine Gareth Southgate will get another chance having missed three outstanding opportunities to put a second major piece of silverware in the Wembley trophy cabinet.

Bookmakers and fans see this England side as Southgate's best yet and, therefore, one of the best of all time.

In Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham he is blessed with a sublime midfield duo, though Southgate could, of course, play the Real Madrid man further forward in amongst Phil Foden, Bukayo Saka and record goalscorer Harry Kane, with a stack of world-class options on the bench should any have off days.

There will always be worries about a defence where Manchester United centre-back Harry Maguire is first choice.

But there are goals in this England side and a greater belief than ever before.

There is no question that Southgate is under pressure to turn countless near-misses into a triumph and he will need to be bolder in team selection and formation tweaks.

But if he gets it right there isn't a better array of forwards in another squad and this England is well capable of going all the way.

ENGLAND TO WIN EURO 2024

Age To Catch Up With Croatia

There is always a Group of Death at a major finals and with Spain, Italy and Croatia drawn into the same section, it's safe to say that Group B gets that moniker this summer.

That means that one very strong nation will be looking at a best third-place finish backdoor route into the last 16 - and that's presuming Albania, the supposed weak link in the section, don't take a lesson from the likes of Japan and Morocco from the last World Cup and sneak into the top two.

And you write off the Albanians at your peril given they finished top of a qualifying group which also included Czech Republic and Poland.

Croatia reached the semis at the last World Cup, yet won only one of their six matches and look overly reliant on veterans like Luka Modric and Marcelo Brozovic in midfield and Andrej Kramaric further forward.

They are all the wrong side of 30 and there is a dearth of youthful attacking talent coming through. Indeed, scoring goals could be a problem.

And if they can't break down the likes of Italy or Spain then they are going to struggle to get the four points that may be needed to qualify. They certainly look a more attractive price to fail than prevail.

Havertz To Make Impact

Top goalscorer honours at the last Euros went jointly to Ronaldo - level with Czech Republic ace Patrik Schick - with the Portugal captain scoring all five of his goals in the group stage.

Someone is going to fill their boots in the group phase with Kai Havertz suggested to do just that and go on to land top-scorer glory.

Havertz is not an out-and-out central striker, but he finished the season in the goals with Arsenal which should fill him with hope ahead of leading the line for his country.

Drawn into Group A alongside Scotland, Switzerland and Hungary and with an obvious route to the quarter-finals, at the very least, if they top their section, five games is more than enough time for the ex-Leverkusen star to build up a decent goal tally.

Go With Foden Assists' Bet

Phil Foden is just coming off his best ever season for Manchester City with 19 goals and eight assists.

That, in turn, has made him an integral figure in Southgate's Three Lions set-up, where a place on the left flank is his to lose.

Foden has the guile and imagination to slide passes galore into the path of his fellow frontmen and will also have a hand in corner and free-kick delivery.

In the countless player props markets advertised for the Euros, the City schemer is a fair bet to have over 1.5 assists in the tournament.
