While he may have been England’s best manager this century, Gareth Southgate was once again unable to bring football home in the summer as the Three Lions fell at the final hurdle in the second successive European Championship final, losing  2-1 to Spain.

That heartbreaking loss saw Southgate resign from his position as England boss after eight years in charge and now the search is on for the next permanent leader.

We look at the candidates at the head of the list, which includes a former England international, a current Premier League manager and the current Under 21s boss.

  • LEE CARSLEY
  • GRAHAM POTTER
  • EDDIE HOWE
  • MAURICIO POCHETTINO

FA Could Hire From Within

Gareth Southgate was promoted from the Under 21s to take over the team after Sam Allardyce’s resignation and a repeat story may be told with Lee Carsley.

The former Everton midfielder has won 23 of his 29 total matches in charge and led the Under 21s to victory in the European Championships in 2023. With tournament success on his side, Carsley may be the preferred choice by the FA.

Potter May Make Managerial Return

Graham Potter has not managed in any capacity since being relieved of his duties at Chelsea in April 2023, but he is still highly-regarded by many at the FA from his time at Brighton.

He has recently stated his desire to return to management and, with the England job opening seemingly at the perfect time for him, Potter looks a strong candidate for the role.

Howe Could Stay In North East

Eddie Howe may be third favourite for the job, but he has recently stated in an interview that his full focus remains on Newcastle and he has not received any contact from the FA regarding the role.

However, given he is regarded as one of the best young English managers around, his head could still be turned if the Three Lions came calling and many fans regard Howe as the preferred choice to succeed Southgate.

Poch Move Unlikely Despite Availability

After parting ways with Chelsea last season, Mauricio Pochettino is one of the biggest managerial names available and we would certainly be a marquee choice for the Three Lions.

The Argentinian has previously confirmed his interest in the position, however the FA have favoured a home manager in each of the last three appointments and it would be a surprise to see them buck this trend.

Previous Performances May Scupper Lampard Hopes

Former England star Frank Lampard enjoyed a stellar international career as a player with 29 goals in 106 appearances, however, it would be seen by many as a step back should the 46-year-old be given the nod.

While he largely succeeded at Derby County, his time in charge at Chelsea and Everton saw a combined win percentage of just 39.85% and this could likely hinder his chances for the job.
