New Liverpool boss Arne Slot will take charge of a Premier League game at Anfield for the first time with Brentford the visitors on Sunday afternoon.

Both clubs won their openers, Liverpool producing a 2-0 win at Ipswich before Brentford pipped London rivals Crystal Palace 2-1.

The Anfield clash is the third and final act of a Sunday trilogy which kicks off with Wolves against Chelsea and Bournemouth versus Newcastle.

Liverpool vs Brentford

Brentford's three visits to Anfield as a Premier League club have all ended in defeat and without them scoring a single goal.

History is certainly against Thomas Frank's men as they head for Liverpool again and it's hard to think of too many reasons why they should be trusted to turn the tide in this fixture.

Both clubs got their 2024/25 seasons off to winning starts last weekend. But while Liverpool were generally excellent in the 2-0 success at Ipswich, the Bees were largely uninspiring in a 2-1 triumph over Crystal Palace.

Clearly both sides were shaking off their summer rust but Brentford are going to have to up their performance massively if they are to put a spoke in the Liverpool wheel. They have a decent reputation for toppling the big boys - but not Liverpool. Not at Anfield anyway.

Arne Slot, handed the thankless task of having to succeed Jurgen Klopp, tweaked the shape from the German's stone-set 4-3-3 and was pleased to see the players Klopp left behind deal with the new ideas.

Indeed, it was still basically a front three of Mohamed Salah, Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota doing all the threatening, firing off 10 shots between them at Portman Road.

Interestingly, the new system does mean a more advanced role for Hungarian Dominik Szoboszlai, effectively given the job of a No.10 and revelling in the opportunity.

Szoboszlai had scored six goals in each of his two seasons at Leipzig, where he was a mainstay off the front line. In his first season at Liverpool he made 25 starts, scoring three times, but that was from a far deeper starting point.

He fired off three shots at Ipswich and will score goals this season. At a decent price he makes more appeal in any time scorer betting than, say, Jota or Diaz.

Bournemouth vs Newcastle

Eddie Howe, the man who saved Bournemouth from dropping out of the Football League and then got them into the Premier League, will always have a place in the heart of Cherries' fans.

Howe, the current boss of Newcastle, can expect a warm reception when he returns to the Vitality Stadium for a flying visit from a crowd who pretty much owe him everything.

What Howe would really love far more than smiles and praise from the stands is three points, but it's something the Magpies haven't managed to get under him on two previous visits.

And they may well not get the win this Sunday, either. Howe is still missing key figures in defence with Fabian Schar, suspended after being sent off in last week's 1-0 win over Southampton, joining the injured Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles on the sidelines.

That means Emil Krafth and Dan Burn presumably pair up in a makeshift back two which Bournemouth can exploit, although former Bournemouth star Lloyd Kelly is also an option.

There is a lot to like about Newcastle as an attacking force though it wasn't seen against Southampton as they had to weather the storm with a man less after Joelinton had given them the lead.

They will get more opportunities against Bournemouth, who opened their campaign with a hard-earned 1-1 draw at Nottingham Forest.

Bournemouth were sensational last year, unable to win at the start of term and odds-on to go down, yet finishing up in 12th place. How Andoni Iraola wasn't named manager of the year remains a mystery.

New £40m striker Evanilson can expect a debut as the Cherries seek someone who can score the goals after Dominic Solanke's exit to Tottenham.

Newcastle lost 11 away games last season, the most of any side in the top 15 in the Premier League. That level of road sickness hardly augurs well for what will be their longest trip of the campaign.

Wolves vs Chelsea

Wolves look a huge price to beat a Chelsea side who, if they aren't in a crisis, don't look far away from one.

It's been yet another unsettled summer at Stamford Bridge with Enzo Maresca parachuted in from Leicester to have little or no say over the abundance of new players being signed up.

Raheem Sterling has demanded out after being left out of the squad for last week's opener at home to Manchester City - which they lost 2-0 - and it's unlikely the former England frontman is the only unhappy bunny in a camp where a lot of big names aren't going to get minutes on the pitch.

It looks a mess, it feels like a mess, the only glimmer of positivity coming in the shape of a 2-0 win over Swiss side Servette in the UEFA Conference League on Thursday. Even then, they were booed off by their fans at half-time and were hanging on at the end. It was a long way from convincing.

So Wolves clearly have nothing to fear and they shouldn't be disheartened at the manner of their opening-weekend 2-0 loss at Arsenal. They matched the Gunners in many departments but do look light in attack and that is going to hold them back.

Only four clubs scored fewer goals than Wolves last term and that statistic alone is why they are hard to back, even against a Chelsea in disarray.

Wolves need to stay tight and frustrate Chelsea and this could end up being a low-scorer.
